Quantiferon Test for Tuberculosis

What is the Quantiferon test for tuberculosis?

The Quantiferon test is a tuberculosis screening test performed using a blood sample. Unlike the tuberculin skin test (PPD), which relies on a skin reaction, the Quantiferon test utilizes a blood analysis technique called the interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) to detect the presence of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, which causes tuberculosis.

Why is it important to take the Quantiferon test?

The Quantiferon test is an effective tool for early detection of tuberculosis. Some reasons why it is important to undergo this test are:

  • Sensitivity and specificity: The Quantiferon test is highly sensitive and specific, meaning it has a superior ability to detect tuberculosis and distinguish it from other infections. This helps ensure an accurate diagnosis.

  • Quick results: Unlike older tests that required several days of waiting, the Quantiferon test provides results within a shorter timeframe. This allows for faster diagnosis and early initiation of treatment if necessary.

  • No interference from BCG vaccine: Some individuals may have received the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine against tuberculosis in the past. The tuberculin skin test can yield false positives in these individuals, but the Quantiferon test is not affected by the BCG vaccine, making it more reliable in such cases.

What do you need to know about the procedure?

The procedure for the Quantiferon test is relatively simple and quick. Here are some key points you should be aware of:

  • Blood sample collection: The Quantiferon test requires a blood sample. Our trained staff will safely and quickly extract the blood sample.

  • Preparation: No special preparation is required for this test. You can continue with your daily routine and follow your regular medication schedules.

  • Results: Once the blood sample has been taken, it will be sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The results will be available within a few days, and our medical team will inform you about them.

  • Interpretation of results: Our expert doctors will interpret the results and explain their significance to you. In case tuberculosis is detected, we will provide you with the appropriate treatment and necessary follow-up.
